Change Management
Change is never easy. Nothing worth doing is. But it is vital to surviving in the marketplace. Like anything that has great power, change can ultimately be tremendously rewarding or unbearably disastrous. The difference is in how it's managed.

Clear, honest communication and proper staff training can improve the odds of success. It's never too early for AP managers to communicate, to listen, and to train.

Managing Change in AP

With new developments, technologies, and regulations impacting AP processes every day, change management has become a must for accounts payable. People are naturally resistant to change. Creatures of habit, who are drawn to the comfortable, we feel threatened when expected to perform in new and different ways.

To lead a transformation well, then, a manager must not only discover and implement the right changes, but she must also guide anxious employees through the process-all the while maintaining business functions. The first three rules of a successful change management program are: communicate, communicate, and communicate. It is also important for AP managers to remember:

  • Effective communication is two-way. Employees should be free to ask questions, offer suggestions, and challenge assumptions and explanations.
  • Communication isn't all verbal. From top-level executives to mid-level managers, anyone in a leadership position should model the attitudes and behaviors that will help the change succeed.
  • Just as people have varied concerns, they respond differently to various communications formats. So make sure you reach everyone.

Blackjack and Accounts Payable
Gambling is a funny thing. The longer you play, the harder it is to stop … Even if you're losing. AP operates the same way. The longer inefficient processes are in place, the harder it is to change them. Check out Patrick's Blog on TAPC and find out how a game of Blackjack turned into an important AP lesson. What happens in Vegas can apply to AP.
