Be an AP Problem Solver
While not explicitly stated in the job description, being an accounts payable manager also means being a professional problem solver. AP managers deal with a myriad of problems large and small that go far beyond making sure the bills are paid.

This issue features information to help you better prepare for the different types of challenges you will face while managing your department, whether it be strained customer relations or a tornado outbreak.

Disaster Planning
Last week's tornado outbreak in the Southeast should remind AP managers everywhere about the importance of having a documented disaster recovery plan, even if putting one together seem like a daunting task.

Managing AP

The relationship between AP departments and their internal customers can often become strained, with clients blaming AP for every missed or late payment. Overcoming this obstacle involves direct communication between AP and customers. Examples include:

  • Including representatives of other departments on your implementation team when rolling out new AP technology.

  • Routinely asking customers to share process improvement ideas.

  • Holding regular, face-to-face meetings with internal customers. Discuss policies, procedures, metrics, goals, etc.

For more on overcoming these and other common AP challenges, check out the no-cost multimedia presentation, Succeeding in Accounts Payable Today, featuring AP best practice consultant Tom Nichols. This presentation, sponsored by Metafile Information Systems, will teach your department to prioritize your goals and make sure you reach them. The video earns 1 CEU.

Now that technology allows us to stay connected to the world 24/7, sleep tends to take a backseat to productivity. However, a recent study shows that getting less – or more – than seven hours of sleep a night can make us stupid. See The Wrong Amount of Sleep Can Age Your Brain by Up to Seven Years.
